Maranacook in Berlin009
Maranacook in Berlin003All of us in a mosque: What you clearly see is one boy group and one girl group. That was at the end of the bike trip, because our teacher wanted us to visit the mosque. You can also see that we all were very tired but happy. It was nice to sit on a cozy place. Bike riding seems okay, but when you drive a while you wish you can sit on a normal seat. Maranacook in Berlin004
Maranacook in Berlin025The whole group after the bike tour around Berlin City: All were happy but a little bit tired. This was an amazing trip. How can a teacher be able to take care of about 40 children? I can’t believe it, because nothing went wrong! No one got hurt and everything was fine.

Maranacook in Berlin020Before we went to the wall museum, we had about 45 minutes to get something to eat. Although the row was very long, many of us went to “Mustafas Gemüse Kebap”, because it’s one of the most popular vegetarian kebaps in Berlin. We had to wait about 25 minutes, but it was worth it.

A room made out of wax. The ground, the furniture and the decoration were made out of wax and everything was lit with candles. It was very beautiful and interesting and the story the owner told us was funny and we really enjoyed listening. But for me that experience was a bit scary too.

Maranacook in Berlin016We all met at 9:00 o’clock in the music building. There we had several discussions with Mr. Salisch, for example about German prejudices, and tried to find out what the exchange students already knew about German celebrities or German history. The students from Maine had lots of funny imaginations of a “typical German” household.
Maranacook in Berlin013You can see the beautiful garden of the castle of Charlottenburg. We were walking through the whole garden and after that we walked around a small lake. But in the summer the garden is greener and all the flowers are more beautiful. Maranacook in Berlin014In the wonderful Castle Charlottenburg we had nice guides for the two different groups. We walked through the rooms and learned many new things about that beautiful castle. It was very interesting how the royals used to live.
Maranacook in Berlin006All of us are sitting in a small restaurant, after we were in the castle of Charlottenburg. We all had to share the food we got (what was very typical German food like sausage, potatoes, Leberkäse, and other things), and we talked to each other a lot. Maranacook in Berlin005
Maranacook in Berlin026The whole group is going by train. Because of the short time we had with the exchange students we had to show them as much as we could so most of the time we spent on driving through Berlin by public transport. Maranacook in Berlin033 All of us went to Bernauer Straße where we visited the Berlin Wall. It was very interesting and even frightening for all of us.As you can see in the picture, some of the exchange students are standing around an information place and listening to a voice that is telling a story about the Berlin wall.
Maranacook in Berlin034On the last day we went to Bernauer Straße where the Berlin Wall was. To remind on the wall there stand steel bars where the wall was. There are also an information place and lots of pictures from that time, as you can see in the picture. Such a historical sight in the middle of Berlin. Maranacook in Berlin030 From a small tower at Bernauer Straße you can see small parts of the former Berlin Wall. It was a really warm day and we walked a lot which was exhausting, so everyone got an ice cream at a small shop in front of the tower and relaxed before we continued the walk.
Maranacook in Berlin031 Maranacook in Berlin032We were at the Berlin Wall Museum at Bernauer Straße. The Americans wanted to see the Berlin wall, so we went to Bernauer Straße. There some students climbed on the wall and we took a group picture in front of the wall.
Maranacook in Berlin028Rosenthaler Platz in the middle of Berlin is a famous place for tourists. There are many shops and sights. This day was the last day of our beautiful trip and we walked through Mitte on the way to a restaurant where we had a last meal together. Maranacook in Berlin029 This picture taken near Hackescher Markt shows what we did most of the time: Walking through Berlin.
Not only the touristic areas, also the small streets and nice places, which only a few people know. Even I don’t know all of them, although I have been in those areas for million times. And that’s one of the best things in Berlin, the small things and also if you have lived in Berlin for 16 years, you still find new, beautiful areas and wonder, how you could overlook them for so many years.
Maranacook in Berlin018We visited Haus Schwarzenberg (Rosenthaler Straße 39, Berlin-Mitte) near Hackescher Markt. There were crazy books and pictures to purchase in the book shop. The whole rooms were painted with abstract figures and symbols.
